When you’re playing Roulette, there may be some terms that you’re not familiar with. Our guide is perfect for beginners just starting out or more experienced players who want to brush up on their knowledge.
Common roulette terminology includes:
- Inside Selections: Plays placed directly on numbers or combinations within the numbered grid.
- Outside Selections: Plays placed on groups of numbers or colors located outside the numbered grid.
- Single Number (Straight Up): A play on one specific number, with the highest standard return at 35:1.
- Split: A play placed on the line separating two numbers, paying 17:1.
- Street: A play covering three consecutive numbers in a row, paying 11:1.
- Corner: A play placed on the intersection of four numbers, paying 8:1.
- Even Money: Selections paying 1:1, such as red/black or odd/even.
American Roulette
The most popular version of the game in the Americas. It has an extra pocket on the wheel, which is a double zero.
Block
Choosing a group of numbers that are together in a block.
Column
A column is picking 12 numbers for your choice, as they appear in a column on the table.
Combination
This is when you choose at least two numbers for your selection.
Corner
This is a choice of four numbers together in a corner.
Double Zero
Only appearing on the American Roulette wheel, this is an extra green zero pocket.
Dozen
As the name suggests, this is a choice of 12 numbers. It’s split into three sections: 1-12, 13-24, and 25-36.
European Roulette
The most common form of Roulette outside of the Americas. It has a single zero pocket, increasing the chance of correctly predicting the numbers.
Even Choice
An even choice is when you pick one of the options that has close to a 50/50 chance of landing. Red/Black, Odd/Even, or High/Low are all even choices.
Inside
Any pick that comes from the numbers on the inside of the table.
Line
Any choice of six numbers in a line.
Outside
A choice from the outside selections on the table, such as Red/Black.
Pockets
These are the spaces on the Roulette wheel.
Split
A single choice that covers two numbers.
Straight Up
When you choose a single number on the wheel.
Street
Selecting three numbers as a single choice.
Wheel
What is spun to start the game, and where the pockets and ball are located.
Zero
Available on both the European and American Roulette wheels. It’s the only green pocket on the European wheel.
